The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes world peace and security through international cooperation in education, the arts, the sciences, and culture. In the metadata domain, UNESCO maintains the UNESCO Thesaurus, a multilingual controlled vocabulary covering education, culture, science, social and human sciences, and communication. UNESCO also plays a key role in promoting open access, digital preservation, and information management standards through its Memory of the World Programme and other initiatives supporting libraries, archives, and cultural heritage institutions globally.
