Governing the Digital Object Identifier system on behalf of registration agencies and their communities.

Standards Body Active

The International DOI Foundation (IDF) is a not-for-profit organization that governs the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) system on behalf of the registration agencies who manage DOI registries and provide services to their respective communities. Introduced in 2000, the DOI system provides persistent identifiers for digital objects, widely used to identify academic journals, research reports, data sets, and official publications. The DOI system is implemented through a federation of registration agencies coordinated by the IDF, with over 391 million DOIs registered as of 2025.
